SOUTH AFRICA - Has 7de LAAN Really Run Out of Money To Pay It's Staff?

13:34:00
Award-winning SABC 2 soapie 7de Laan could possibly be coming to an end next week, as the show's contract with the SABC has not yet been renewed for a new season, scheduled to begin on Monday.

A source, who works at Danie Odendaal Productions - the company which produces 7de Laan - exclusively revealed to TshisaLIVE that the production company has ran out of money after digging out of their pockets to fund the production for the past four months.

As a result, the insider explained that employees, including the cast and crew, were warned on Thursday morning that they should not expect to be paid their salaries for October.

"In the meeting that we were in this morning, we were basically told not to expect our salaries on Tuesday."

The contract was sent to the SABC months ago, however, the public broadcaster has since not renewed it, and therefore there is no funding, according to the source. However, the source added that despite this, it's business as usual in the office.

"We are still working at the production company right now. We have not downed tools. The environment in the office is quite sombre at the moment. But everything is quite normal, except for the fact that we are not going to get paid."

The show's line producer also confirmed to TshisaLIVE that 7de Laan is awaiting a signed contract from the SABC, however, failed to reveal whether a new season of show will be aired on Monday.

"We have been running for about two and half months now. We don't have a signed contract. We believe it's still in progress. So yes, we are busy with the contract at the moment," she said, before also suggesting that the there is a high possibility that production team might not get paid.

"If there is no contract in place, it means we can't invoice. So, you can read between the lines."

As previously reported, the soapie has been hit by several big changes over the last few months, leaving it remarkably different and facing an unclear future.

No less than ten main actors have left the show since the turn of the year, including some of the show's most popular characters. Moreover, according to recent viewership figures, the soapie has continued its freefall, losing around 269 527 viewers from June to July.

DSTV ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO ITS CHANNELS & INTRODUCE NEW EXPLORA DECODER

13:37:00
There’s good news and bad news for DStv subscribers. Let's start with the bad news first.
From the end of October the following channels will stop airing: CBS Action and Drama, AMC (which is home to Fear The Walking Dead) and True Movies.

General Manager for Content, Aletta Alberts, explained the rationale behind these changes. “Research has helped us identify some channels that weren’t popular or that had the same content as other existing channels.”

tvplus is still trying to find out if another channel will pick up the popular Fear The Walking Dead, which is currently airing the second half of its second season in America, so watch this space.

The good news
DStv will change many of its channels to HD. These include M-Net Movies All Stars, M-Net Family, Vuzu, Mzansi Wethu and kykNET & Kie as well as international favourites such as BBC First, HISTORY, Crime & Investigation and Food Network.

DStv will also add more channels to other DStv packages. Extra customers will get ITV Choice HD and Lifetime, Family customers will pick up M-Net Movies Stars HD, while EasyView customers will receive Jim Jam and Mzansi Music.

Extra customers will also be able to enjoy the specialist language channels: RAI, BVN, RTPI, TV5 Monde and Deutsche Welle.

New DStv Explora
There’s also a new DStv Explora decoder coming. The new Explora has the same extensive Catch Up service, the ability to rent up to 30 BoxOffice movies and internet connectivity for Catch Up Plus, Remote Recording and ShowMax.

This extensive content catalogue means subscribers are recording less on their Exploras, which is why DStv says that they’ve made the hard drive smaller to keep the decoder affordable. Customers can record up to 80 hours of HD content on their personal playlist (current Explora has 150 hours of HD recordings).

The new Explora gets a new A7 remote control, which incorporates features that customers have asked for. These include backlit buttons, which enables users to see it in the dark, the ability to easily programme it as a universal remote for your TV and music system, and a ShowMax button for one-touch access.

SOUTH AFRICA - It's Official! 3 TALK WITH NOELEEN Has been CANCELLED!!!

20:39:00

THIS IS SAD NEWS TO MANY SOUTH AFRICANS WHO WERE FANS OF ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TALK SHOW HOSTS THE COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN... as news arrives that show is to be no more after approximately 13 years on air.

The final episode will air on 20th April 2015 and we will bid farewell to Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu.

The SABC issued the following statement on Monday:
“When we started the show, I could never have imagined that we would have such an enduring relationship with viewers. I have had the most fabulous 12 years on 3Talk. It’s been an amazing adventure which has brought so much fun and meaning into my life, but after a lot of thought, I think it’s time for me to bid farewell.”

The decision to end 3Talk was apparently mutual, with Maholwana-Sangqu opting for a break although it is unclear if she will reappear on TV screens again. The show's ratings have declined in the past year dropping to a low of 406 000 late last year.

DSTV's MNET MOVIES To Add Ad Breaks In 2015!

10:25:00

Seems their may be a possible new stream of income for the satellite network, DSTV as they are about to introduce ad breaks between movies. This is a bold move as previously there weren't any breaks just a static screen in between their movie schedules. Could this be the beginning of a whole lot of changes for the paychannel and will this open a whole kind of can of worms for the future? Who knows but as soon as we here anything, we will definitely post it for you.

Here's what has been reported thus far by Channel 24:

"From January 2015 all of the M-Net Movies channels on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform will move to starting movies immediately after each other instead of movies starting on the hour or the half hour.
A year ago M-Net simplified the M-Net Movies schedule. Every movie starts at the earliest quarter of an hour. M-Net then said the change was to help viewers know outright when to expect the start of a new film on any of the nine M-Net Movies channels on DStv.

In January there will be a schedule format change. It will be introduced to all of the M-Net Movies channels on DStv, with a new film starting after each other with a break of maximum five minutes between them for promos and commercials.

"The ad break or promo break between movies on M-Net Movies will only be five minutes max," M-Net tells Channel24. "If a movie for instance starts at 20:00, when it ends, whatever time it might be, there will only be 5 minutes before the next movie starts."

While the M-Net Series channels have been struggling with ratings, prompting the relaunch of M-Net Series Showcase as M-Net Edge and M-Net Series Reality changing to VUZU AMP, the M-Net Movies channels have seen a ratings surge, especially during the previous four months to September which saw a viewership spike for the M-Net Movies channels.

M-Net says that after viewership feedback and viewer research, it tweaked the schedules, now broadcasting and starting movies across the M-Net Movies channels at times where viewers indicated that they are most likely to want to watch specifically themed movies. The strategy has seen a major ratings surge so far for the M-Net Movies channels."
