BIRDS OF PREY (2020) TRIVIA
Being produced under the working title of "Fox Force Five." Fox Force Five was the name of a fictional television show that never made it past the production of its pilot in the movie Pulp Fiction (1994).
Margot Robbie pitched the idea of Birds of Prey to DC and Warner Bros. as a female-led superhero action movie and they agreed with her vision. "I think there's a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick," says Robbie, which is why we're going to see an R-rated version of the story. In addition to starring in the upcoming movie, Robbie is also on board as producer with her LuckyChap production company, so her hands are all over the project. Birds of Prey is LuckyChap's largest project to date at $75 million.
Before Ewan McGregor was cast as Black Mask, Sharlto Copley and Sam Rockwell were considered to play Black Mask. Rockwell passed on the role, but was considered the "archetype" for the casting.
In the Birds of Prey comics, neither Cassandra Cain or Renee Montoya have been members of the eponymous team. Harley Quinn hadn't been with the team during the film's production but was added to the team during the Rebirth era in Oct 2019.
It has been rumored that Birds of Prey (2020) will be the first movie of a "Harley Quinn Trilogy". The second and third movies in the trilogy are rumored to be Gotham City Sirens and Birds of Prey vs. Gotham City Sirens, respectively.
Harley adopts a hyena in this film as a pet. In the comics, she kept two hyenas named Bud and Lou (named after comic duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello).Harley Quinn was introduced on the big screen in 2016's Suicide Squad with Margot Robbie portraying her and giving birth to the creation of millions of Harley Quinn Halloween costumes. With this new chapter comes a different look for her character. Quinn won't be seen as an object of desire, which is very much on purpose. "That's what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer," says Birds of Prey costume designer Erin Benach. Robbie added, "Yeah, it's definitely less male gaze-y." Robbie had discussed how uncomfortable her outfits were for Suicide Squad, so that has all been altered for the upcoming movie.
In the comics, Barbara Gordon was one of the founding members of the Birds of Prey, first as Oracle and later as Batgirl in the New 52 reboot. While Gordon doesn't appear in the film, Cassandra Cain, who served as Batgirl in the comics for a time prior to the New 52 reboot, does appear.
Cathy Yan is the first Asian woman to direct a superhero movie. She is second woman to direct a DC film after Patty Jenkins.
Although yet to be confirmed by the filmmakers, Jared Leto had teased on Instagram that he'll be reprising his role as the Joker. The post has since been deleted.
Before Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast, Cristin Milioti, Margaret Qualley, and Sofia Boutella were rumored to be in the running for the role of Huntress. Previously, Alexandra Daddario had been rumored as well.
It was announced in July 2019 that the film will be rated R.
Kristen Stewart was the studio's main choice for the role of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl before the character was cut from the script.
Birds of Prey features two cop characters that are named after Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. Timm was the co-creator of Batman the Animated Series and is an artist for DC comics and Paul Dini is the creator of Harley QuinnBlack Canary appears in a nightclub dress with a fishnet design. In the comics, Black Canary's classic superhero outfit involves fishnet stockings.
Both Lady Shiva and Katana were rumored to be in the film. Karen Fukuhara would have reprised her role as Katana from Suicide Squad (2016).
The first live-action film appearance of Renee Montoya, a character introduced in Batman: The Animated Series (1992). A previous live-action version appeared on Gotham (2014) played by Victoria Cartagena. A similar character, Anna Ramirez, appeared in The Dark Knight (2008) played by Monique Gabriela Curnen.
Before Jurnee Smollett-Bell was cast, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Janelle Monáe were rumored to be in the running for Black Canary. Previously, Vanessa Kirby, Jodie Comer, and Blake Lively were rumored as well.
The Penguin was rumored to be the villain either in this movie or The Batman (2021).
David Cain was rumoured to be the villain of the film.
This will be the second time that both Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are working together after the two met on Fargo (2014).

Both Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Ella Jay Basco were in at least one Grey's Anatomy (2005) episode.
Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Ella Jay Basco's Uncle/Godfather Dante had worked with the late Robin Williams in 1996's Jack and 1991's Hook respectively. Williams was considered early on for the role of The Riddler in Batman Forever.This is a spin-off of a character originally created as a love interest for the Joker, a character previously played by Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill. Ewan McGregor has another connection to both actors. Mark Hamill played Luke Skywalker jn the original Star Wars trilogy, while McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequels. Nicholson appeared in The Shining, while McGregor appeared in the sequel, Doctor Sleep.
This is the first theatrically released film in the DC Extended Universe to be Rated R, although the Ultimate Edition of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) was given the said rating by the MPA.
