One of the cult favourites from the 90's is without a doubt The Crow with tragedy surrounding the very intricate fabric of the movie namely the subsequent death of lead actor, Brandon Lee, son of the legendary Bruce Lee.
I went into this thinking the movie must have aged since it's release 25 years ago but to my surprise it holds up very nicely. The broody atmosphere and the way in which every shot is carefully panned close and tight so as not to really reveal the city as well as the non-existent time frame it's set in add to the movie's timeless feel.
The almost dark Shakepearian tragedy meets revenge movie provides an immortal tale of love lost which painful as it is for the characters still manages for us to identify with in the 21st century. The story itself is extremely simple and easy to follow with our hero finding those who destroyed his life and his love and ultimately bringing them all to his deathly justice.
The characters aren't overplayed and even the screenplay provides a simple enough story for us to follow and them to tell their grim tale. Looking back one must marvel at some of the feats achieved by this movie including the fact that this was made before the CGI monstrosities we now call movies where barely one scene doesn't involve multi-million dollar effects and The Crow successfully passes well and endures.
If you haven't yet seen this movie, we suggest you make a plan to see it because even now in 2019 it still holds together better than most and provides over 90 minutes of excitement and vengeance, much of which is currently overdone in contemporary cinema.
